Northeast Tour

So we finally made it! WE’RE IN THE NORTHEAST!

This is evidence that we were in NY:

What’s a trip to Flushing without your Korean photobooth pic?

Right now we’re in Hoboken, NJ. We’ve been going back from NJ to NY for maybe the past week? I was able to go home (NY) and man was it refreshing. Being at home is great but being on the road is more fun. We’ve been crashing at my place when screening hosts are unable to house us so I’ve been home for maybe three days already? It’s comforting since it’s so familiar but I definitely love being with my teammates and not knowing where we’re spending the night till the second we get to our hosts’ homes. It’s pretty awesome.

So rewind to about a week and we have CHODAE CHURCH!

This was a pretty amazing crowd for sure. We had a crowd of over 90 people! We were so impressed by the passion and the overall community.

After the screening we were invited to the English Ministry’s pool party.

We also went to church with them the coming Sunday.

SPOTLIGHT ON… Clara Pak

She’s been one of tour’s first Tumblr followers and an eager potential nomad. When she’s not serving as a missionary in Venezuela (and participating in creative fundraisers) she’s a student at GWU. A fan of meeting new people and helping others, Clara is definitely someone we should all watch out for; this girl’s going to change the world.

We were so impressed by her enthusiasm and passion for this issue. It’s so humbling to meet people like her; it reassures us that the work we’re doing is making an impact.

Keep up the great work, Clara!

More pics of the great people of Chodae

Aren’t they all so wonderful?

We were so lucky to get to meet these people.

Keep up the great work, Chodae!

Purdue, you rock my world.

Talk about an amazing screening!

The Purdue Christian Campus House hosted a screening of 30+ audience members, all of whom were filled with passion for the freedom of the North Korean people.

Here’s a snapshot of some of coolest kids on the block.

Now, what would a trip to Indiana be without your local fair?

That’s right, these wonderful people of Purdue showed us around to the most amazing fair ever! It was straight out of Charolette’s Web and being the mid-west noob that I am, I was fascinated by it all.

And ELEPHANT EARS… as in giant plates of fried dough.

Our friend, Jesse, was a fan of these.

And now for the stars of the night

Wilbur <3

SO PRECIOUS. This was my first time seeing pigs and cows up close. The goats were pretty precious; they reminded me of the ones we passed by in Colorado.

Overall, this was a pretty amazing crowd.

Thank you, Purdue, for a wonderful screening and a great night out!

Hello hello!

So last post I promised some details about Chicago.

One church that really stood out was The Korean Church of Chicago. What an amazing group of passionate people. We had over ten chapter sign ups. So excited to see chapters springing up in Illinois whoot!

I was really impressed by the middle schoolers involvement. At first I was hesitant about showing this film to such a young age group but their reactions proved my initial concerns wrong. The questions were so intelligent and there was genuine interest, passion, and determination to fight this cause.

I was so taken back by how mature this age group was; how big their hearts were.

Guess you learn something everyday!

Justin Park of Emory and Sooyon Park of NYU took us nomads out for a night in Chicago. I forgot the name of the restaurant but we had some killer sushi. Joonsy will still confidently state that his dad’s is better.

I plan to fight this statement until he treats both Jess and me out to sushi… hehehe.

Afterwards we took the water taxi to just visit downtown. I love water taxies and because the locals take it on a daily basis because it is the most convenient way to get around, I can state this without sounding like a tourist.

Man, Chicago is so pretty at night. I still consider it to be a mini-NYC but it’s definitely winning over my heart. It’s like NYC but with wider and cleaner sidewalks. Awesome. Plus they have the bean.

Some shots of the beautiful city:

Willis Tower aka the old Sears Tower.

Us standing in front of the replica! On our way back to Chicago we should really go up to the top.

Oh also… let me introduce you to the most high class McDonalds… ever.

Completely decked out with two floors and a parking patrol squad, we were impressed. We just drove past it/crept near it because we didn’t want to pay for parking.

Hehe and on a personal note…

I GOT TO SEE SARAH! She’s one of my crewbies from back at school. She housed us for a night and it was wonderful to see her again. She took Joonsung and me to the bay area and Millennium Park. Jessica and Sandra were on the other side of Chicago, exploring the famous Chicago Diner.

We’re happy people.

We’re happier when we’re with Sarah.

THE BEAN! I love this thing way too much.

And of course the picture fountain

Overall, Chicago treated us super well.

Ah, I miss it.

Preview for the next few posts coming up:

Indiana- Cows, pigs, horses, goats, and sheep. Oh yes.

NJ/NY- WE HAVE FINALLY HIT THE NORTHEAST!

Until next time!

Currently in the wonderful state of Michigan with past nomad, Kat Key! We had all spoken to her over the phone at one point in the past year but never had we actually met her. It was so nice to finally see who we’ve been speaking to.

We had an amazing screening at GVSU with LiNK chapter president, Hannah. She showed us around Ann Arbor and let us crash at her amazing apartment. So excited to see where she’ll go with LiNK.

And on a side note, we’ve had the privilege of running into the cutest pets! I was never a huge cat person but after seeing the cute kittens that our hosts have, I might be swayed…

Such a fan.

More pictures to come on our trip.

I’ll get into Chicago in another post.

Both Jess and I can see ourselves living here in the future…

Stay tuned!

Northeast nomads

Hello everyone! This is Esther Suh blogging on behalf of the Northeast Nomads.

Yesterday we had our first screening at All Nations Baptist Church of Iowa City.

There was a great turnout (around 70 people) and everyone was so interested in the issue. It was really encouraging to be around people who were genuinely passionate and saw an immediate need to help the people of North Korea.

Nothing feels better than knowing the work you’re doing is making a difference. This is a world issue and it feels good knowing that there are individuals across the entire country who are eager to make a difference.

Being on the road… lets take a few minutes to talk about this.

It’s definitely a challenge. Being on the road has taught me to serve my team. That’s one thing Kira told me to do. She said to serve my team; I’m really grateful she said that because it’s important for us to look out for each other. In order for us to free and love the people of North Korea we must first love each other.

A few nights ago, we were SO CLOSE to sleeping in the van; I was a little concerned. We barely have enough room to keep everything in the van; I kid you not, it would have been a game of full-out Tetris.

Last night, our church’s pastor booked us two hotel rooms— we were blown away. We couldn’t believe how wonderful the accommodations were. I felt kind of guilty for sleeping so luxuriously doing this work.

Well… right now we’re watching Ultimate Fighting Championship with our Illinois hosts and I’m apparently missing out on a really intense game so on that note, I will talk to you guys later.

Hi everyone! We’re the Northeast Nomads for LiNK’s Summer 2010 Tour! We’re super excited to meet everyone and to spread awareness about the North Korean human rights crisis, ultimately changing lives.

Here’s a little bit about ourselves. Enjoy!

Esther Suh

Esther Suh is the life of the party! Her sarcasm and wit always keep the team laughing. She was raised in New York in a traditional Korean family and is a New Yorker through and through. She just finished her first year at Smith College and has big plans for the future. She is also an amazing athlete and member of the crew team at Smith. This girl is unstoppable and has started not one, but TWO LiNK chapters. She is so passionate about North Korea and will do whatever it takes to see an end to this crisis. Brave, bold, and intelligent. This girl has what it takes to create change in our world.

Jessica Bradford

Jess, also known as B-ford, has a smile that lights up the whole room. Born and raised in Texas, B-ford brings her Southern charm to everyone around her. A rising senior at Texas A&M, she plans to graduate with a degree in Political Science. Serving nations in need is nothing new for Jess. A past volunteer for several NGOs and a leader of her school organization, Global Justice, Jess is selfless when it comes to pouring her heart out to those in need. This gal is someone to watch out for, always looking for new ways to change the world and doing things with her own personal style.
 Joonsung Kim

Commonly known as Joonsy within the team, Joonsung is the only XY chromosome on the Northeast team. Joonsung is a rising senior at Cal Poly State University with a Graphic Design major. A man filled with patience and wisdom, Joonsung is always a dependable person on lean on. Raised in South Korea and currently a proud Cali resident, Joonsung is eager to use his graphic design skills to better inform the public about LiNK’s work and the North Korean human rights crisis. Keep an eye out for this up and coming graphic artist; he’s going to change the world and the way we see it.
That’s it for now! Keep an eye out for us! We’ll be coming to a screening near YOU!

Hey everyone, Justin here. Well, we’ve been on the road for a couple of weeks now and it has been incredibly busy! So far we’ve already covered around 7,000 miles and driven to/through 17 states. The weather has been cold, but the people have been great. We’ve been spoiled so much the last couple of weeks! Everybody we’ve stayed with and met have been truly amazing, so thank you to everybody who has been out to our screenings so far.

I’m going to keep this brief because we have to head off to Rutgers in a few minutes, but this blog has been long overdue. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone we’ve met so far and let the rest of the Northeast know that we are excited to meet you.

Much Love,

Justin & the NE Nomads
